The letter arrived unexpectedly and before she had even read the contents, she knew that her life would never be the same, changed forever in a way she felt she could not even begin to comprehend. She felt the coolness of the breeze coming off the surface of the lake and as she stared into the murky depths, it seemed to offer a peaceful solution to the feelings of grief and despair that overwhelmed her.

The frame around the picture represents her frame of mind after she receives the letter. In Japanese tradition, cranes represent peace and longevity. As they are leaving the frame this indicates an unhappy ending, or maybe not, because while there is life there is hope.
